Load-Aware Replay of I/O Traces

چکیده
Trace replay is one of the commonly used techniques in benchmarking I/O systems. However it is still not obvious if trace replay faithfully preserves important characteristics of the original application. While this may not be a significant problem when traces are collected and replayed in a same or similar system environment, many issues arise when traces are replayed in a different kind of environment than the one used during the trace collection process. In this work-in-progress, we present a novel mode of I/O trace replay called Load-based replay that aims to preserve the same I/O load pattern of original application traces irrespective of the system it is replayed.

Extracting flexible, replayable models from large block traces
I/O traces are good sources of information about realworld workloads; replaying such traces is often used to reproduce the most realistic system behavior possible. But traces tend to be large, hard to use and share, and inflexible in representing more than the exact system conditions at the point the traces were captured. Often, however, researchers are not interested in the precise details sto...
متن کامل//TRACE: Parallel Trace Replay with Approximate Causal Events
//TRACE is a new approach for extracting and replaying traces of parallel applications to recreate their I/O behavior. Its tracing engine automatically discovers inter-node data dependencies and inter-request compute times for each node (process) in an application. This information is reflected in per-node annotated I/O traces. Such annotation allows a parallel replayer to closely mimic the beh...
متن کاملWarming up storage-level caches with bonfire
Large caches in storage servers have become essential for meeting service levels required by applications. These caches need to be warmed with data often today due to various scenarios including dynamic creation of cache space and server restarts that clear cache contents. When large storage caches are warmed at the rate of application I/O, warmup can take hours or even days, thus affecting bot...
متن کاملTrace replay based I/O performance studies for enterprise workload migration
Predicting the performance of an application before migrating and deploying on a target system is a daunting but important task. The performance benchmarking of an application in a new environment is a time consuming and expensive process. An approach that performs performance benchmarking of complex application in a new environment without deploying will be an advantage. We have developed and ...
متن کاملOn the Accuracy and Scalability of Intensive I/O Workload Replay
We introduce a replay tool that can be used to replay captured I/O workloads for performance evaluation of highperformance storage systems. We study several sources in the stock operating system that introduce the uncertainty of replaying a workload. Based on the remedies of these findings, we design and develop a new replay tool called hfplayer that can more accurately replay intensive block I...
